“You mustn’t be afraid to dream bigger, little one…” is something my grandfather used to say to me and is tattooed down the spine of my back (the script is in my mother’s handwriting.) My grandfather was always my biggest fan, my number one cheerleader…he believed I could do anything I set my mind to. If I close my eyes, I can still hear him saying these words to me and in many ways, it is his words that have driven me towards my goals. Because he believed in me, I believed in myself…and so I think this is one of the biggest things that motivates me on the bike….the opportunity to connect with our wonderful “Bikergang” community, be their biggest fan, their biggest cheerleader…and together we are better…helping each other achieve anything and everything we ever hoped for.
As a school principal, I also have this mission to cultivate in this generation of children more than only academic success…I want them to be healthy--mind, body and soul. Our bodies were made to move and if you aren’t moving, well, then you are sitting and that only makes you a good sitter. I have always tried to lead by example. The best way I know how to show our youth the importance of all-round wellness and balance in life is to live that kind of life…it’s not just about talking the talk…we can all be really good at that…with 750 sets of teenage eyes on me five days a week, 200 days a year…I need to walk the walk. That in itself is pretty damn good motivation!
Watching and participating in all kinds of sports, traveling, finding the most effective and healthy ways to fuel our bodies, reading, researching and writing...oh, and laying in the sun!
